Just as Bad by DJ Ìràwọ̀: Cost of Justice Short Story Shortlist

Every year since 2022, I have been either longlisted or shortlisted for at least one writing award.

I do not share it because I am afraid that I will not win it.

I have decided to start sharing my journey to demonstrate appreciation, believing that someday soon, I shall start getting the star prize just as I do for my music prowess.

Even if I don't, to be nominated in the long or short list means that I am doing something meaningful that I must be grateful for.

So, I have repented.

I wrote this story in under one hour because I had other deadlines to catch up with during this period.

I was fatigued.

I almost did not write it but I did not want to disappoint Prince Adeola Goloba, who believed in me enough to tag me to the application link so that he would not look at me with ungrateful eyes.

Thank you, Sir.

My hands were shaking when I was writing it because of the pressure to submit before the midnight deadline.

So, I did not even have the time to edit it.

I am grateful for the selection and I hope I win regardless.

Congratulations to me. 🙏

TWO REVISED BOOKS FOR SALE BY DJ ÌRÀWỌ̀

Gender Discrimination in the Nigerian Music Industry: A Musician’s Reflection is my presentation delivered as an independent scholar at the 8th Annual Lagos Studies Association conference, held at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, on June 21, 2023. I edited it into an eBook in 2025.

So, if you need mentoring as a Nigerian female musician, I suggest you buy this book to read the experiences of thirteen Nigerian female musicians such as DJ Ìràwọ̀, Simi, Níníọlá, Niyola, Yẹmí Àlàdé, etc.

It is also important for the parents and guardians of these female musicians to know what to expect and how to protect their daughters and guardians from predators in the music industry.

My book, How to Play the Gángan Talking Drum in Seven Days, was first published in 2012 as a handbook for my inaugural talking drum workshop at the Ẹni Ọbańkẹ́ Art Centre, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

The second edition was written in 2015 as a follow-up handbook for my second talking drum workshop and concert at a lounge in Lagos.

The third edition was edited as an eBook in 2021.

This is the fourth edition as an eBook in 2025.

It launches on June 1.

My next revised book will be Freedom from Toxic City: How to Get a Separation and Divorce.

This book was first published as an eBook in 2022.
